Deep cleaning vs. regular cleaning
The term “deep clean” is used in lots of cleaning products and services, but it can be confusing to know what exactly it means. Regular cleaning is done to maintain a visible level of cleanliness. This type of cleaning is done on a surface level to remove dirt and grime.
Deep cleaning, however, is a heavier, more focused cleaning that goes beyond the surface level and emphasizes loosening and removing heavy dirt buildup while focusing on cleaning areas not usually focused on during a regular clean. Deep cleaning is typically done every few months and can be thought of as a cleanliness “reset,” getting something as clean as when you originally had it.
Deep cleaning wood floors removes dirt and grime that regular cleaning may leave behind. Dirt, dust and allergens can get into seams and crevices of wood floors. Deep cleaning has many benefits beyond a better clean.
Extra protection: Deep cleaning clears away all the harmful particles that can wear down a floor’s finish. The finish is a protective top coat on wood floors and is the first line of defense against wear and tear. As it wears down, floors look duller over time.
Healthier home: Deep cleaning wood floors helps protect one of the largest, most-used areas in your home. This improves air quality, and makes the home healthier.
Maintenance savings: Proactive maintenance and deep cleaning can save you money in the long run. Since dirt, dust and particles act as abrasives on a floor’s finish, deep cleaning can help prolong the time needed for services like sanding and refinishing. The combination of routine floor care and deep cleaning is all you need to have great looking floors for life.
Tools for deep cleaning wood floors
To get the most from your deep clean, be sure to have the right tools and cleaners.
Dry Mop/Broom/Vacuum for cleaning prep and removing the initial layer of dust and dirt. The Bona Mop has everything you need for wet and dry use. If you have a vacuum, make sure it’s safe for wood floors.
Wet Mop/Spray Mop that’s sturdy and easy to use. Deep cleaning wood floors might need a little extra effort, so a quality premium spray mop can make the job more comfortable. Avoid the traditional mop and bucket to avoid spills and extra work.
Mop Pads that are absorbent and help lift and separate heavy dirt build up. The Bona microfiber pad pack offers reusable pads that help you get the most from your mop.
Floor Deep Cleaner that is strong enough to remove tough stains while leaving floors looking great. Bona PowerPlus Hardwood Floor Deep Cleaner makes deep cleaning easy and hassle-free. For sanitizing and disinfecting hard surface floors, try the Bona PowerPlus Antibacterial Hard Surface Floor Cleaner.
Method for deep cleaning hardwood floors
With all the tools ready, it’s time for a deep clean. Remember that the length of time needed to deep clean wood floors is based on your regular cleaning routine. If you clean your wood floors daily, the deep cleaning process should be a breeze. Here’s what to remember when deep cleaning hardwood floors.
1. Get rid of dust with a dry mop, broom or hardwood floor vacuum. Be sure to clean in the direction of the floorboards.
2. Wet mop floors with an effective microfiber pad and mop to get rid of dirt and any particles left behind when dusting. Limit the amount of liquid you use to mop since excess liquid can damage a wood floor.
3. Identify problem areas like tough stains, or buildup on or between the floorboards. Clean appropriately with a floor cleaner. For getting in between the floorboards, use a vacuum or putty knife for tough to reach stains. A putty knife can also be used to scrape off buildup on the floor’s surface.
4. Mop floors in the direction of the boards with your deep cleaner. Focus on small areas, changing the mop pad accordingly. Trying to deep clean and entire floor with a single mop pad won’t get the clean you want.
5. Examine floors after cleaning and see if stains and buildup remain.
